During Saturday, around 50 firefighters battled the flames that broke out in the morning in Vatera on the southern part of the island in the morning.

Around 450 people from two hotels and around 90 holiday homes scrambled to safety as police evacuated the area as the flames got closer.

A firefighter was reportedly injured when the fire engulfed the popular tourist resort, Reuters reports.

Multiple fires

The Lesbos fire is only one of a total of four extensive fires across the country raging at the same time as a heat wave with temperatures of over 40 degrees is plaguing Greece.

The most extensive fire affects areas of northeastern Greece near the border with Turkey.

The fire has been raging for several days and is threatening the Dadia National Park with its famous pine trees and colonies of condors.

"Exceptionally difficult" fire to fight

Over 300 firefighters and a number of planes and helicopters have been deployed and a couple of hundred loggers set about creating fire roads to prevent the flames from spreading to the national park and other nearby areas.

Yiannis Artopoios, spokesman for the rescue service, described the fire as "exceptionally difficult" to deal with.

On Saturday, major efforts were also launched against fires in mountain areas in the region of Western Macedonia and in the southeastern Peloponnese.

An entire village had to be evacuated late Saturday because of the fires.
