Sierra National Forest spokesman Daniel Patterson said evacuation orders were put in place on Saturday for more than 6,000 people living in a sparsely populated rural area.
Earlier it was reported that in California, a fire in Yosemite National Park could not be extinguished for three days.
The flame spread over more than 600 hectares.
The fire threatens the park's largest sequoia, the Giant Grizzly.
