Amnesty International said that Tunisia's post-revolution achievements are now in jeopardy due to the policies of President Kais Saied.

According to the organization, since Saeed seized power on July 25, 2021, he has granted himself wide powers and weakened basic institutions concerned with the protection of human rights, which threatens the right to freedom of expression, freedom of association, the right to a fair trial, and other rights. .

The organization noted that under his rule, prominent Tunisian figures, including journalists, members of the Assembly of People's Representatives, and other politicians, including critics of the president and people considered opponents of him, were targeted because of their opposition to the president's seizure of power.

They were also subjected to arbitrary travel bans, and were sometimes even arrested or subjected to criminal investigations and trials before the courts. The trial of civilians before military courts increased significantly, where at least 12 civilians were tried, including those who were tried for peacefully exercising their right to expression. .

Over the past months, according to the organization, "President Qais Saeed repeatedly attacked the independence of the judiciary by dissolving the Supreme Judicial Council."

The organization called for the initiative to act now to urge the Tunisian president to implement the following steps, which are: ending the trial of civilians before military courts, reinstating the recently dissolved Supreme Judicial Council, protecting judges from dismissal by decision of the President of the Republic, and not adopting new legislation that threatens the freedom of Form or join associations.
