Despite the fact that the last hearings regarding the storming of the Capitol are said to take place tonight Swedish time, there is a possibility that more hearings will be held in the future, says Erik Åsard.

As for the investigation at large, he believes it will result in three main consequences: the committee's report, the legal aftermath and the political effects.

- What the investigation will result in, formally speaking, is a report from the committee that will be very thick and detailed.

Then there is much speculation that the committee will present evidence that Donald Trump and some of his closest associates were guilty of breaking the law.

To be presented to the Ministry of Justice

The idea is then for the report to be presented to the Department of Justice in Washington because they are the ones who have the power when it comes to the law, says Erik Åsard.

- It is difficult to reason more deeply about the legal aftermath now, but a departed president has never before been charged with anything in the United States.

If that happens, it would be a big event indeed.

The political effect is also difficult to predict

The political consequences of the investigation are also difficult to predict, Erik Åsard thinks.

At the same time, he points out that issues other than the storming of the congress building will probably dominate in connection with the congressional elections this fall.

- Questions about, among other things, the economy and inflation will probably be the most important.

But what all the hearings in the committee have led to is that trust in Trump has decreased among Republicans.

Many of them seem tired of hearing Trump talk about the 2020 election as a rigged election, and think other issues are much more important.
