Spain is suffering the worst wave of forest fires in a decade and many of them continue to burn uncontrollably this Thursday, such as a dozen of those that devastate Galicia, where 30,000 hectares have burned in recent days, or the one in Ateca (Zaragoza), which it has already burned 14,000.

"The Ateca fire maintains the perimeter of the burned area thanks to the weather and the increase in means" that combat it, the Aragon government said in a statement Wednesday night, referring to the fire that maintained a perimeter of 14,000 hectares and which forced the

preventive evacuation of some 1,700 people.

The A2 motorway between Madrid and Barcelona,

cut off since Tuesday in a section near the Ateca fire, was

"reopened to traffic"

this morning, the Aragon government said on Twitter.

Spain has suffered in recent days from numerous fires,

fueled by a heat wave

that lasted from July 9 to 18 and was the most extreme recorded in the country, according to provisional data from the State Meteorological Agency.

Since the beginning of the year, some 70,000 hectares have burned, "almost double the average of the last decade," according to the president of the government, Pedro Sánchez, this week.

The European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), which makes a different accounting, indicated that 2022 is being the worst year in terms of fires, with 319 fires and 193,247 hectares burned until July 16, already surpassing the record for all 2012, of 255 fires and 189,376 hectares affected, reports Afp.

Castile and Leon

The residents of the Avila town of

El Hoyo de Pinares

(2,136 inhabitants), evicted since Monday due to the

proximity of the flames of the Cebreros fire

, live in the provisional shelter installed in Las Navas del Marqués between resignation and lack of information over his people and his properties.

Currently

there are less than 90 people sheltered

in the facilities set up in this town of 5,100 inhabitants, after the first day they reached around 300, according to what the married couple Antonio and Julia, two of the people who are still in the shelter.

The mayor of El Hoyo de Pinares (Ávila), David Beltrán, whose town was evicted last Monday, has called for unity and understanding from his 2,136 neighbors through an emotional message, in which he points out that they

are " like the stone pine" that "holds the heat and keeps its green, even if it burns".

"We are all having a bad time, it is a critical and tremendously dangerous situation, which we have never experienced," said the councilor, before pointing out how the fire has "surrounded" this town, which during these summer days is notably increasing its population, he said almost

in tears.

Catalonia

The

residents of River Park

, an urbanization located in the municipality of

El Pont de Vilomara

(Barcelona), have lamented the houses lost due to the fire, and the black and gray trail that it has left on the landscape around their homes, which used to be " spectacular".

The

fire, which apparently was intentional

, started last Sunday at that point in the

Bages region

and devastated more than

1,700 hectares

, affecting dozens of homes, some of which have been completely destroyed.

Speaking to EfeTelevisión, Jordi explains that the Mossos d'Esquadra evicted them from their homes in a matter of half an hour, when the fire started, and that they could hardly take anything from their homes.

When they returned, they returned to a place that had little to do with the landscape in which they lived before the fire, and some of them

found their house destroyed by fire.

"So much ash and everything burnt does not enter your retina. Before, we had spectacular views," adds Jordi, who criticizes the lack of maintenance of the forest by the City Council of El Pont de Vilomara.
