Lavrov visits the Arab League on Sunday and addresses its council of delegates

Sergey Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will deliver a speech on Sunday before the Arab League in Cairo, the Arab League said Thursday.

Lavrov's visit comes after a summit between the leaders of Russia, Turkey and Iran in Tehran.

Lavrov will meet in Cairo, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and representatives of the 22 member states.

An official source in the General Secretariat of the League stated that the Russian Foreign Minister will address the League Council at the level of delegates.

Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the conflict in Syria and the war in Ukraine during a summit Tuesday in Tehran with his Turkish counterparts Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iranian Ibrahim Raisi.

Lavrov's visit to Cairo comes more than a week after US President Joe Biden's first tour in the Middle East, during which he visited Israel, the Palestinian territories and Saudi Arabia, where he participated in the summit of the six member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council, in addition to Egypt, Jordan and Iraq.

On Thursday, Biden signed a security document with Prime Minister Yair Lapid in Israel, in which the United States pledged not to allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons.

During his visit to Jeddah on Saturday, Biden assured a number of Arab leaders that Washington would not leave "a void that could be filled by China, Russia or Iran."
