A last minute announcement.

Three American passengers traveling to Scotland to attend the British Golf Open had the unpleasant surprise of learning at an altitude of 10,000 m that their connecting flight had been cancelled.

The three passengers were indeed traveling between Austin, Texas (United States) and London's Heathrow airport (United Kingdom) on July 11, says Business Insider.

They then had to take a flight between London and Edinburgh (United Kingdom).

Both routes were operated by British Airways.

Shortly after the first plane took off, travelers received an email from the carrier notifying them that the second flight was cancelled.

With no internet connection in the sky, the Americans learned the news after landing in London.

When the train replaces the plane

All tickets were booked in November 2021 through American Airlines, a partner airline of British Airways.

In its message, the American carrier apologized but did not specify the reasons for the cancellation.

The three golf enthusiasts had no choice but to travel to Edinburgh by train, lengthening their journey time in the process.

They also had to leave the airport without their checked baggage, which was not issued to them.

Passengers were promised future reimbursement for their unused airfare, train travel and purchases of clothing and hygiene products.

Sixty cancellations

Many flights had to be canceled on July 11 at Heathrow Airport.

Operations managers have indeed asked carriers to cut a total of 61 flight routes that day.

In two of its terminals, they had to deal with an influx of travelers too large to be handled.
