Temperatures are expected to rise in the United Kingdom today, Tuesday, to set a new record, amid a heat wave in several European countries. The heat wave in Britain has disrupted travel, business, and schools.

According to the British Met Office, the temperature is likely to exceed 40 degrees Celsius in eastern England, breaking the previous record of 38.7 degrees Celsius set at Cambridge Botanic Garden on 25 July 2019.

Last night, the highest temperature in Britain was recorded, as the temperature did not drop below 25 degrees Celsius in different regions of the country.

The heat wave experienced by several European countries first passed through Spain and caused deaths, and this heat wave is the second recorded in Europe within a month.

The proliferation of these phenomena is due to the direct repercussions of climate warming, according to scientists, as greenhouse gas emissions increase their strength, duration and frequency as well.

Continuous fires

In a related context, forest fires that forced thousands to leave their homes continued to spread in Italy and France, and strong winds contributed to thwarting efforts to combat those fires.

Italian firefighters were able to take 30 people to safety after a fire broke out in the municipality of Massarosa, north of Pisa, in Tuscany, on Monday evening, and winds that blew in the area fanned the flames in a way that threatened homes in the area.

A bridge linking the Tuscany town of Lucca to the coastal region of Viareggio was closed for a while.

It was reported that fires broke out repeatedly in the past days on the Italian mainland and the islands of Sardinia and Sicily, and the authorities attributed many of the fires to neglect in light of the drought that led to the drying of major rivers, in addition to deliberate arson.

In France, where temperatures recorded record levels on Monday, forest fires in the Gironde region of the Atlantic coast have been burning for days, and they burned about 19,300 hectares last week, and firefighters in the region are facing a difficult situation due to strong winds that obstruct their work.
