The number of victims of a collision between a bus and a truck in Minya Governorate rose to 25 dead and 35 injured today, amid Arab condolences to Egypt.

The Minya Governorate said that a passenger bus carrying 50 passengers collided with a parked truck near the village of Barsha in Minya, about 300 km south of Cairo.

And the governorate's website published that the transport vehicle was parked on one side of the road to change the tire, and it was hit from behind by a passenger bus that was coming from Sohag governorate and heading to Cairo.

The governorate authorities announced early on that the accident resulted in the death of 22 citizens and the injury of 33 others, stressing that the majority of the dead and injured were from the governorates of Sohag and Assiut (south), while the Ministry of Social Solidarity in the governorate decided to spend an amount of 10,000 pounds (about 530 dollars) for the families of each deceased. And two thousand Egyptian pounds (about $105) for each injured person, according to the same source.

"Akhbar Al-Youm" newspaper reported that the Public Prosecution office has launched an investigation into the accident and is listening to the injured.

In a related context, the Sultan of Oman Haitham bin Tariq and the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, sent cables of condolences for the victims of the accident, and the Bahraini Ministry of Foreign Affairs offered its condolences to Egypt, according to official statements.

In turn, the Turkish Foreign Ministry offered its condolences to the families of the victims and to the Egyptian government, wishing a speedy recovery to the wounded.

Traffic accidents are frequent in Egypt for reasons, most notably the lax application of safety standards and reckless driving, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, amid government measures for years to inaugurate new roads and expand highway axes to reduce accidents.

In 2020, 7,000 people died in traffic accidents in Egypt, according to official figures.
