68-year-old Bai Gaoshan is watering the small vegetable garden while amusing his 2-year-old grandson.
In the vegetable garden, eggplants, cucumbers, zucchini, and shallots are growing just fine, and two apple trees are already covered with green fruits.
"When General Secretary Xi Jinping came last time, I introduced him to the crops grown in the fields one by one. The General Secretary smiled and said, 'These fruits and vegetables are enough for your family to eat'."
Fangcheng New Village, Xiping Town, Yunzhou District, Datong City, Shanxi Province, where Bai Gaoshan lives, is an ex-situ poverty alleviation and relocation village.
He and more than 200 villagers moved here one after another from the earthy cave dwellings on the thin slopes and the saline-alkali land that have lived for generations, and life has changed since then.

Bai Gaoshan's son Bai Lijun told the general secretary that after moving to Xincun, he went to a vocational training school with government funding and became an electric welder, earning more than 40,000 yuan in 2019.
