An arson attack was allegedly carried out on a car belonging to the consulate in Stuttgart on Tuesday night.

The flames spread from the parked car to eight other vehicles, police and prosecutors said.

The facade of the consulate and another building were also damaged by fire and heat.

The police suspect an arson attack because witnesses saw two masked people flee the scene of the fire in front of the Turkish consulate.

So far, however, no letter of confession has appeared.

As the police and public prosecutor announced on Tuesday, the state protection of the criminal police took up the investigation.

The police estimated the damage at tens of thousands of euros.

"I strongly condemn the dangerous arson attack on a car owned by the Turkish Consulate General - directly in front of the Consulate General," said Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU).

In a conversation with the Turkish Consul General Mehmet Erkan Öner, he assured that the police headquarters in Stuttgart was investigating at high pressure.

The State Criminal Police Office was also involved.

Stuttgart's Lord Mayor Frank Nopper (CDU) said: "We reject any form of violence - by anyone - in the strongest possible terms.

We stand firmly by the side of the Turkish Consul General and our Turkish friends here in Stuttgart.”

Federal Minister of Agriculture Cem Özdemir (Greens) tweeted: "I am appalled by the fire in front of the Turkish consulate in my Stuttgart constituency.

Luckily nobody got hurt.

I hope that the perpetrators will be found quickly and that the crime will be completely cleared up.”
