• The results of the sales this summer in Paris are satisfactory, according to a study by the Paris Ile-de-France Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

  • 78% of traders surveyed by the CCI recorded an increase in turnover of at least 10% compared to last year.

  • “There is a surge of optimism when tourists return.

    It's a return to normal.

In the end, it's a good result, you have to know how to look at the glass half full, ”comments Dominique Restino, president of the CCI Paris Ile-de-France.

"Parisian traders are, for the first time in a long time, generally satisfied with the sales": this is the conclusion of a study by the Paris Ile-de-France Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI), revealed on Monday

.

While the first assessments reported a "mixed" situation, and a small majority of dissatisfied traders (55%), this end of the season has apparently made it possible to make up for part of the accumulated delay.

78% of respondents recorded an increase in turnover of at least 10%, and half (50%) said they were satisfied, according to this study, which covers 300 traders located in the 20 Parisian districts.

The return of international customers

This better than expected situation is largely due to the return of foreign tourists.

"There are many tourists who have returned from abroad, European and American tourists in particular", comments Dominique Restino, president of the CCI Paris Ile-de-France.

77% of merchants observed frequentation of their shop by international customers during these sales.

"We have found our usual clientele of tourists, they have a strong purchasing power and do not look at the expense, unlike the French clientele", rejoices a retailer in men's ready-to-wear from Montparnasse, interviewed in the study, which also includes 60 face-to-face interviews with shopkeepers on rue de Rennes.

However, Russian and Asian tourists, who represent a large part of the international clientele, are still lacking, due to the coronavirus and the war in Ukraine.

Above all, merchants had to suffer from supply difficulties and a rise in the price of raw materials, for the same reasons.

More than a third (36%) had their orders unfilled by their suppliers and more than two-thirds (66%) experienced delivery delays.

79% of merchants have seen a price increase at their wholesalers.

“We need to reproduce in France, comments the president of the CCI Paris Ile-de-France.

There is this awareness of ecology.

This is the basic trend, we want to buy local.

An old saying goes "our shopping is our job".

More than ever, this is the truth.

"In the end, it's a good result"

Due to the global context, and despite an improvement in sales compared to last year, this year's results are still overall lower than 2019, with 61% of traders who have not regained their figure. pre-covid summer sales.

Not enough to depress Dominique Restino: “There is renewed optimism when tourists return.

It's a return to normal.

In the end, it's a good result, you have to know how to look at the glass half full.
