The firefighters couldn't do anything.

On Sunday, a 28-year-old man died while swimming in an old quarry in Saint-Malo-de-Phily, south of Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine).

According to the emergency services, the man had plunged into the water before starting to swim and then "sinking" before the eyes of his friends.

When firefighters arrived, the young man was dead.

The gendarmes were also present at the scene.

An autopsy will be carried out but "everything suggests" that it is a hydrocution, caused by the difference in outside temperature and water.

On Sunday, around 36 degrees were recorded in the shade in Ille-et-Vilaine.

The department, like all of Brittany, was placed on heat wave red alert this Monday with temperatures exceeding the 40 degrees expected during the day.

The old Saint-Malo-de-Phily quarry is closed to the public.

But for several years, many people go there to walk and even swim there.

The waters are very deep there and therefore remain very cold.
