In 2020, it was decided that the old prison in Härnösand would be reopened.
Since then, the buildings have undergone major renovations, and two months ago a grand inauguration of the institution was held.
- These new places are a very welcome addition to our prison capacity, said the Swedish Directorate of Prison's Director General Martin Holmgren then.
At present, 22 of the total capacity is used in 87 places.
This is due to the fact that various technical measures have not been completed on time.
- We have had to restrict the expected supply of new inmates, but we have never had to move anyone, says Radomir Sarkan.
Plans to fill the institution this fall
Measures regarding monitoring, alarms and locks have needed to be implemented.
- We have prepared according to the schedule that has been in the project and we opened the institution with those intentions as well, but then it has turned out that not everything was ready and then we have had to back down.
This autumn, the plan is to fill the institution with over 80 inmates.
