A pilot of a firefighting plane died on Friday near the city of
Vila Nova de Foz Coa
(north) after the accident of the device that participated in the extinction of the flames in
Portugal,
civil protection announced.
"It is with great dismay that I learned of the death of the pilot who was maneuvering the plane that crashed while fighting a fire," Portuguese Prime Minister
António Costa
wrote on Twitter.
The pilot was the only occupant of the plane.
"At the moment, we don't have more details of what happened," André Fernandes,
national civil protection commander
, told the media .
Portugal has been hit by an intense heat wave for a week, with temperatures close to
47 degrees
in the accident area, and the emergency services recorded a dozen active fires on Friday.
