American President Joe Biden met with new Israeli Prime Minister Jair Lapid on his first visit to the Middle East since taking office.

After the bilateral meeting in Jerusalem, Biden and Lapid want to attend an online summit with the leaders of India and the United Arab Emirates.

A press conference is then planned.

Biden and Lapid also want to sign a statement that would reaffirm "the unbreakable ties" between the two countries, a senior US official said.

Part of the joint declaration is also the commitment never to allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon.

The statement also noted that "action will be taken against Iran's destabilizing activities," particularly the threat to Israel, the government official said.

The security relationship between the United States and Israel would continue to expand.

Biden pledged the "unwavering" support of the United States to Israel upon his arrival on Wednesday.

The US President wants to hold talks with Israeli President Itzak Herzog and opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu later in the day.

Next Friday, a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is on Biden's agenda in the West Bank.

The peace process between Israel and the Palestinians has been idle since 2014.

Real progress was also not expected in connection with Biden's visit.

The American President wanted to travel to Saudi Arabia on Friday.
