This is the first time anyone has been tried for the executions in Iran in 1988. The case has received a great deal of attention and has been followed all over the world.

Sima Mirzaei, who lost seven of her relatives in the summer of 1988, has traveled to Stockholm from Paris.

- I hope that he is sentenced to the strongest punishment that exists so that he can feel a little of our pain, she says.

The 61-year-old man was arrested as soon as he landed at Arlanda in November 2019. Exiled Iranians say that they tricked him into a trap.

He is charged with a serious violation of international law and murder.

According to prosecutors, he has played a leading role in the executions of political prisoners in 1988. In the summer of 1988, thousands of prisoners were executed in prisons around Iran, according to human rights organizations.

Witnesses have identified the man as involved in the executions at Gohardash Prison.

According to the testimonies, the man read out the names of the prisoners who were to be executed and took them to the execution sites where they were hanged.

Has denied the allegations

Since the trial began in August last year, the man has denied the accusations.

His defense lawyers have argued that their stories are not credible and that Sweden should not try the case.

The case is one of the largest international criminal cases in Swedish history.

The preliminary investigation is several thousand pages long and over 70 people from several different countries have testified.

The trial has aroused strong feelings among those who testified.

Nasrullah Marandi spent several years in Gohardash Prison.

He has been in Stockholm District Court during all the 92 days of the trial.

- During the trial, it felt like I was thrown back 34 years in time to the death corridor and lived the days there, he says.

In the clip below, you can see how the atmosphere was outside the district court during the trial last year.
