Several European cities are now developing strategies for how to handle periods of extremely hot weather.

In Barcelona they are called refugios climaticos, a kind of refuge or climate zone.

The goal for 2022 is more than 200 climate zones that will provide coolness and shade, they are activated between 15 June and 15 September.

Some are outdoors in parks, with access to shade and water.

Others are indoors, for example at museums and schools, where the temperature must not exceed 26 degrees.

The zones are primarily there to give respite to sensitive groups such as the elderly and young children, but also to others.

Similar projects in several other cities

The project began in 2020, the goal is that by 2030, all residents will have a maximum of five minutes walk to a climate zone.

And you are not alone, Bilbao and Seville are two other Spanish cities with similar plans.

This type of project is also available in cities such as Vienna, Budapest, Athens and Paris.

In different ways, they want to prevent large cities from becoming "heat islands", places without shade and with a higher temperature than the surroundings.

This is done with the help of more greenery and water, but also other tricks such as painting roofs white to reflect the sun's heat, and trying to shade large areas with asphalt such as schoolyards.
