North Korea has announced through state media that it will approve some areas effectively controlled by pro-Russian militants in Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts in eastern Ukraine as independent states.

The Ukrainian government has strongly condemned this and announced a diplomatic relations with North Korea.

According to the North Korean Central News Agency, Foreign Minister Choi Soni said on the 13th that some areas in eastern Ukraine, which are virtually controlled by pro-Russian insurgents in Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts, I sent a letter to the side informing them that they had decided to approve it as an independent state.

Foreign Minister Choi stated in this statement that he "expressed his intention to develop national relations in accordance with the principles of independence, peace and goodwill," and expressed his intention to strengthen relations.

In response, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement, "strongly condemning North Korea's decision to approve the so-called'independence'. It's a serious infringement. "

"Ukraine declares a severance of diplomatic relations with North Korea in response to such unfriendly acts," and emphasized that it will continue to respond rigorously to violations of its sovereignty and territorial conservation.

This region of Ukraine has been unilaterally approved by Russia in February and by Syria last month as an independent state.
