Delegations from Ukraine, Russia and Turkey met in Istanbul on Wednesday for the first time in three months to try to unblock Ukraine's ports of grain exports that are sorely lacking on the world market.

But, after three hours of discussions between military experts on the European side of the Bosphorus, the discussions were lifted at the end of the afternoon without it being possible to assess whether they allowed the slightest progress.

Some 20 million tons of cereals are still immobilized in the ports of the Odessa region.

The head of American diplomacy Antony Blinken assured that 1.6 million Ukrainians had been forcibly moved to Russia, denouncing a deliberate operation on the part of Moscow to empty part of the country of its inhabitants.

Concern over Russian gas deliveries rose several notches when Gazprom said it was unable to guarantee the proper functioning of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, which supplies Europe.

European countries fear that Moscow will use a technical reason to permanently halt its deliveries, while the gas pipeline is currently shut down for ten days for maintenance.
