The Liberal Democratic Party, led by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, won a landslide victory in the Japanese House of Councilors election held yesterday (10th).

It is analyzed that the assassination death of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe caused the rally of the conservative vote.

Local public broadcaster NHK reported that the ruling party secured 76 seats out of 125 seats as of 4:50 a.m. today, including 63 seats from the LDP and 13 seats from the coalition ruling Gongmyung Party.

If the seats of the ruling party, which are not subject to this election, are combined, they have already secured 146 seats, achieving a majority of the total seats in the House of Representatives.

Prime Minister Kishida was able to strengthen her position within the party by winning the House of Representatives elections in October last year as a signboard of the LDP.

In addition, the four opposition parties, which are positive for constitutional amendment, the Liberal Democratic Party, the Gongmyung Party, the Japan Restoration Society, and the People's Democratic Party, have secured 176 seats, which is more than two-thirds of the total number of seats in the House of Representatives, which is a requirement for constitutional amendment.

The possibility is raised that the debate over constitutional amendment may be accelerated amid growing security concerns in Japan due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, China's military expansion, and North Korea's improved nuclear and missile capabilities.

In this election, the LDP made a promise to realize constitutional amendment at an early stage, including the stipulation of the Self-Defense Forces in the constitution.
