Watch.. The Syrian President visits Aleppo Governorate for the first time in more than 11 years
On Friday, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad visited a major power plant and a water pumping station in northern Syria, according to what the presidency announced, in the first declared visit to Aleppo governorate since the outbreak of the conflict that has been going on for more than 11 years.
And the presidency's account on the Telegram app reported that al-Assad visited the Aleppo Thermal Station in the eastern countryside of Aleppo, to witness "the launch of the work of the fifth group of the station after its rehabilitation."
Al-Assad told the station's workers in a video tape broadcast by the presidency that "the province of Aleppo, and specifically the city, has suffered differently from what all other provinces have suffered (...) and no major city has suffered as the city of Aleppo has, not on the issue of water, electricity, services, nor missiles destruction and terrorism.
He added, "It is the right of the province of Aleppo and the city of Aleppo to be the biggest beneficiary of this achievement," which is to repair the station, which is one of the main stations in Syria, and re-working it would contribute to providing electricity to Aleppo and its suburbs.
Al-Assad also attended the launch of pumping operations from the water station in the town of Tal Hasel in the eastern countryside of Aleppo, which was out of service in 2012 due to the conflict.
And on Friday evening, the Syrian presidency said via Telegram that Assad and his family "visited the Umayyad Mosque in Aleppo (...) and the old city markets, which opened their doors to visitors on the eve of Eid al-Adha."
The Umayyad Mosque and the mentioned markets were severely damaged during the battles that took place in the city.
This is Assad's first visit to Aleppo governorate, the bulk of which has been out of government forces' control since 2012. Over the past years, government forces have gradually regained control over the majority of the province following intense battles against the opposition factions and ISIS.
