A man has been arrested for attempted murder after an apparent shooting attack on former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as he delivered a speech in the western city of Nara, Japanese media reported.

Citing police sources, state broadcaster NHK said the suspect appears to be in his 40s and a weapon was seized.

Contacted by AFP, the local police were unable to make any statements immediately.

US Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel said on Friday he was "sad and shocked" by the shooting attack on the former Japanese prime minister.

"We are all saddened and shocked by the shooting attack on former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo. Abe-san was an outstanding leader of Japan and a staunch ally of the United States. The American government and people pray for the well-being of Abe-san, his family and the Japanese people," Emanuel said in a statement.
