On Friday, the foreign ministers of the Group of Twenty in Indonesia concluded their meeting without reaching a unified statement on the Russian war on Ukraine and its repercussions.

The Russian war in Ukraine and its impact on the global economy dominated the meeting, which took place on the Indonesian island of Bali.

Cries of "When are you going to stop the war?"

and "Why don't you stop the war?"

While (Russian Foreign Minister Sergei) Lavrov was shaking hands with his Indonesian counterpart, Retno Marsudi, at the beginning of the meeting.

Indonesia, which seeks to maintain a neutral position as a host country, has called since the opening of the meeting for an end to the conflict, warning of its dire consequences for the entire world.

"It is our responsibility to end the war as quickly as possible and to settle our differences at the negotiating table, not on the battlefield," Marsudi said.

She pointed out that the repercussions of the war "are visible all over the world in terms of food, energy and budgets...as usual, poor and developing countries are most affected."

Lavrov leaves the hall

Lavrov left the foreign ministers' meeting of the Group of Twenty during a speech to his German counterpart, Annalina Birbock, in which she criticized Moscow over the war in Ukraine, according to diplomats.

Diplomats said that Lavrov later left the afternoon session, before an online post by Ukraine's foreign minister, and also missed a speech by his US counterpart, Anthony Blinken, in which he condemned Russia during a closed-door meeting in Bali.

Blinken refused to meet separately with Lavrov, and denounced Russia's responsibility in the food and energy crises in the world, calling on Moscow to allow the export of grain from Ukraine.

Commenting on the US Secretary of State's refusal to hold a one-on-one meeting with him, Lavrov said that Moscow would not follow anyone, and that it was the United States that abandoned all contacts.

On the other hand, Blinken told reporters, "What we have heard today so far is an important consensus from the whole world, not just the United States... in order to stop the aggression" of Russia.

The German Foreign Minister also criticized Moscow, saying that it opposes dialogue with international partners.

Birbock told German television from the meeting place in Bali that Lavrov "left the first session in the middle" and missed a second session, "which clearly shows that he is not interested in international cooperation or dialogue with other partners."

Russia: The West failed to isolate Moscow

The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the West failed to isolate Moscow in the G-20.

The United States - backed by a section of its Western allies - called for Moscow to be excluded from international forums, but Indonesia, which is keen on its neutrality, confirmed its call to the Russian Foreign Minister and called in return for his Ukrainian counterpart.

Lavrov accused Western countries of exploiting the G-20 platform for a purpose other than being a forum for discussing major global problems.

The front of the Western Allies also suffered a setback, with the departure of British Foreign Secretary Liz Terrasse quickly after the announcement of the resignation of Prime Minister Boris Johnson from the leadership of the Conservative Party.

The meeting was also affected by the announcement of the assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during an election rally in his country.

This ministerial meeting paves the way for the Presidents and Leaders Summit in November in Bali, which was originally to be devoted to discussing ways to ensure the recovery of the global economy after the shock of the “Covid-19” epidemic.

However, the Russian war in Ukraine changed priorities, and prompted the Westerners to form a united front to denounce the war, which is causing a sharp rise in food and energy prices.
