At around 11:30 am today (8th), former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot and killed while campaigning ahead of the House of Councilors election in Nara City, Nara Prefecture, Japan.

Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot to the chest and neck and immediately taken to hospital, but it is known that he is currently in cardiac arrest.

The suspect, a Japanese man in his 40s, was immediately arrested and is being investigated on charges of attempted murder.

The weapon used by the suspect is believed to be a pistol.
