The police had to use their stun gun to subdue him.

Arrested on Tuesday afternoon near the Colombia shopping center in Rennes, the man who had exhibited a knife in the middle of the street was referred to the prosecution on Thursday.

He will be tried before the criminal court on September 5 for acts of intentional violence against national police officers and intentional violence with a weapon.

This 27-year-old Afghan national first threatened the shopping center security guards and then a passerby, before attempting to stab the three police officers who came to arrest him.

"None of the victims was physically injured," said the Rennes prosecutor's office.

Already known to the judiciary, the man said "to have no memory of the facts", according to the public prosecutor Philippe Astruc.

A psychiatric expertise was ordered.

The defendant was remanded in custody.
