The judge ruled to satisfy the application of the prosecutor of the Republic of Crimea and to recognize the "established and newly revealed crimes" on the territory of the peninsula as "war crimes and crimes against humanity, genocide of national ethnic groups."

Earlier, the Investigative Committee opened a criminal case under the article on genocide in connection with the murder by the Nazis of more than 500 patients of the Lotoshinsky Regional Psychiatric Hospital in the Moscow region during the Great Patriotic War.

In October 2021, Russia sent requests to Germany, Canada, Latvia, Poland, the United States and Estonia for legal assistance in the investigation of the genocide of the peoples of the USSR during the Great Patriotic War and received information from a number of countries.
