Emirates Ifta Council: There is no Islamic law to single out Friday for fasting if it coincides with the day of Arafat

The Fatwa Services Department of the Emirates Council for Sharia Fatwa issued a legal fatwa in which it clarified the ruling on singling out Fridays to fast if it falls on the day of Arafa, in response to the public’s questions and inquiries.

And the fatwa clarified: “The scholars have agreed on the legitimacy of singling out Fridays if there is a legitimate reason for fasting on it.”

With regard to fasting on the Day of Arafat, the fatwa clarified that fasting on this day is desirable - for non-pilgrims - when it was authenticated on the authority of Abu Qatada, may God be pleased with him: “The Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, was asked about fasting on the Day of Arafah?

With regard to the prohibition on singling out Friday for fasting, the fatwa stated: “The majority of scholars are unanimously agreed that fasting on the day of Arafat is desirable, even if it coincides with Friday. It is the fasting of Arafat, not singling out the day of Friday.. Based on that, it is desirable to fast the day of Arafat, which corresponds to Friday this year, because of the great reward on this day.
