Because of the rise in food and energy prices, the poor have increased by 71 million in just 3 months!

The United Nations said that the sharp rise in food and energy prices in the world led to the spread of poverty, which in just three months affected 71 million people in low-income countries.

The United Nations Development Program warned in a statement that this acceleration of poverty "is much faster than the shock of the Covid-19 pandemic," stressing that the countries concerned will need the support of the multilateral system "to secure their needs."

He said, "At a time when interest rates are increasing in response to the inflation boom, there is a risk of causing new poverty resulting from deflation, which will exacerbate the crisis even more, which in turn will lead to an acceleration and deepening of poverty in the world."

According to "AFP", the report dealt with the situation in 159 countries, noting that the countries that suffer the most dangerous situations are located in the Balkans, the Caspian Sea and sub-Saharan Africa, especially the Sahel region.

"The unprecedented rise in prices means for many people around the world that the food they could have access to yesterday is no longer available today," UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner said in a statement.

He believed that "this cost of living crisis is throwing millions of people into poverty," which threatens to spread "famine at an astonishing speed," at a time when "the risks of exacerbating social unrest are increasing day by day."

Among the countries facing the most serious consequences, as a result of high prices, are Yemen, Sudan, Ethiopia, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Haiti, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Mali, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Tanzania.
