The National Board of Education has received a handful of applications for protection hunting of woodpeckers over the past ten years, mainly in inland municipalities.

- The woodpecker is protected and we always make an assessment that it does not affect the species' conservation status, but when nothing else helps and they cause too much damage, we grant protection hunting, says Anna Wiklund who is deputy head of the nature conservation unit, Västerbotten County Administrative Board.
Marcus Ohlsson on Tåvägen in Vindeln thinks it is good that protection hunting is granted.
- I know that they are worthy of protection and protected, but I would also like to call them pests, he says.
