In southern Sweden, several professional growers have stopped using apples, but recently the fruit is on the rise again.

In Mälardalen, the area of apple orchards has increased in recent years, says Kristina Homman at the County Administrative Board of Dalarna.

Courses in plant cultivation

Now the trend seems to have reached Dalarna as well.

Dalarna's first professional apple orchard was recently started outside Hedemora.

- It is a crop that can be had here and we may have greater opportunities to grow apples than we thought.

Kristina works as a project manager for skills development aimed at agriculture and rural areas in Dalarna and has noticed the increased interest in apple growing, among other things through the interest in the courses that the county administrative board has held in fruit growing.

"Important for the total production"

Of all apples consumed in Sweden, only 20 percent are Swedish-grown.

At the same time, there is a food strategy that is about increasing Sweden's degree of self-sufficiency, ie how well Sweden can manage without food imports.

- Therefore, apples and fruit become an interesting part of the total food production.

That is why it is important that the crops exist - see more in the clip.
