The head of the Transitional Sovereign Council in Sudan, Lieutenant-General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, issued a decision to relieve the civilian members of the council from their positions, while the Forces for Freedom and Change-Central Council renewed its calls to continue the protests demanding civilian rule.

A statement issued by the Sovereignty Council stated that Al-Burhan issued, today, Wednesday, a constitutional decree to relieve the civilian members of the Council from their positions.

Al-Burhan announced last Monday that the armed forces decided to withdraw from the current political negotiations, and urged the political and revolutionary parties and forces to form an independent government of competencies to complete the transitional phase.

For his part, a member of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, Al-Hadi Idris, said that the crises his country is going through require dialogue in order to stop the bloodshed.

In a speech in Zalingei, Central Darfur state, he stressed the importance of cooperating with the regular forces to establish security and achieve peace.

continue protests

On the other hand, the Forces for Freedom and Change-Central Council announced yesterday its rejection of the decisions announced by the President of the Sovereign Council, describing them as a maneuver, calling for the continuation of the protests demanding civilian rule.

During a press conference in Khartoum, Omar Al-Digair, a leader of the Forces of Freedom and Change, described the decisions contained in Al-Burhan’s speech as a tactical maneuver and retreat under the pressure of the masses, and said that the speech neglected the reality of the crisis, which is the coup of last October 25.

Al-Diqair added that there is a real opportunity for the forces of the revolution to unite and achieve victory, as he put it.

He added that they are betting on the will of the people, who is able to open the doors of hope in the future, accusing the government of being preoccupied only with silencing mouths and confronting the peaceful civil movement.

Earlier today, the Forces for Change issued a statement calling for what it described as a mass escalation in all its peaceful ways, including sit-ins, demonstrations, and political strikes, all the way to civil disobedience, to force the current authority to step down.

Al-Burhan Initiative

The Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council announced yesterday, in a speech broadcast on Sudanese television, the withdrawal of the military institution from the dialogue of the tripartite mechanism, consisting of the United Nations, the African Union and the East and Central African Development Community (IGAD).

Al-Burhan said that the goal is to allow the political forces to form a government of independent national competencies.

He added that after the formation of the new government, the Sovereignty Council will be dissolved, and a Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, consisting of the army and the Rapid Support Forces, will be formed, which will be responsible for security and defense tasks in the country.

The army commander called on the political and revolutionary forces to engage in an immediate and serious dialogue to return the country to the path of democratic transition.

Al-Burhan's decisions came as hundreds of Sudanese continued their sit-in for the fifth consecutive day to demand civilian rule and an end to the military coup carried out by the army chief last year.

These decisions abolished the power-sharing between the political forces and the military, according to arrangements for a transitional period that followed the fall of the regime of President Omar al-Bashir in 2019.
