“Do you have an iPhone (or Samsung) cable?
is a sentence that we often hear at the end of the day, when the battery of smartphones reaches the threshold where we do not know if it will still last the evening.
This obviously remains the most common way to charge your smartphone, but there has been an alternative for several years: inductive charging.

Double MagSafe charger, for the Apple ecosystem
With the iPhone 12, Apple brought its MagSafe feature to inductive charging to make it easier to use a wireless iPhone charger.
Concretely, MagSafe is an arrangement of magnets that allows an iPhone to be correctly aligned on a compatible induction charger.
And among the compatible devices, we find this double MagSafe charger marketed by Apple, which allows you to charge your iPhone 12 or 13 on one side, or even an older iPhone but without the alignment of the magnets.

Everything you need to know about induction charging
You might think induction charging is magic, but it's actually based on a well-known principle, which is similar to induction cookers.
On the charger as on the smartphone, there is a coil that creates a magnetic field.
By aligning the two, the field passes from one coil to the other and thus supplies the battery of the smartphone.
This therefore implies that the two are perfectly aligned, and that is why Apple created the MagSafe iPhone charger, which incorporates magnets on the charger side and on the iPhone side to avoid offsetting.
A wireless charger is handy, and the technology is even found in some furniture.
On the other hand, wireless charging is often slower than wired charging and can even be slower if you don't use the right smartphone/charger combination, and that's why it's better to use a charger certified for his phone model.
How do you know if your smartphone is compatible with an induction charger?
It is not necessarily easy to know if your smartphone is compatible with induction charging.
The best way is to simply check its features list, which should include the words "wireless charging" or "Qi charging".
High-end smartphones are often compatible, while entry-level models can skip the technology.
For some brands it's a question of date: all iPhones marketed since the iPhone 8 in 2017 are compatible.
All the others, like the iPhone 7, didn't support the feature yet.
