A 21-year-old young man drowned on Monday afternoon in the body of water at the Varennes-sur-Seine leisure center (Seine-et-Marne).

The emergency services were called around 4:45 p.m. because the victim had disappeared.

Firefighters quickly arrived on the scene.

Rescuers, including divers from Sdis 77, tried several times to save him, but these attempts were unsuccessful.

The young man was officially declared dead shortly after his body was taken out of the pond.

Witnesses witnessed the drowning

An investigation has been launched to determine the conditions in which the victim died, the police said.

The deceased man lived in Grande-Paroisse (Seine-et-Marne), a town located not far from the leisure center.

Witnesses reportedly said they saw the swimmer suddenly sink into the water.
