The internationally acclaimed performance artist Marina Abramović will take over the first Pina Bausch professorship at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen in the winter semester 2022/23.

The professorship, which was newly established with funds from the state government, is named after the Wuppertal dance artist Pina Bausch, who died in 2009.

She had received her dance training at the Folkwang University.

Abramović will teach in Essen for a year, the university announced on Tuesday.

The 75-year-old Abramović, who was born in Belgrade, is one of the most internationally important and radical performance artists.

After studying painting, she has been performing worldwide since 1973, in which she repeatedly explores her own psychological and physical limits.

In 2010, the multiple documenta participant sat in silence on a chair in the New York Museum of Modern Art for almost three months every day.

In April she was in Berlin in a project about the singer Maria Callas at the Deutsche Oper – lying in a bed.

In four work phases in 2022 and 2023, Abramović wants to work with 25 selected students from all fields of study - music, theater, dance, design and science - the university announced.

Abramović never met Pina Bausch personally.

She regrets that very much, said Abramović.
