- It is very unusual with so many in such a short time, says Måns Hjernquist who is a supervisor at Lilla Karlsö and chairman of Gotland's ornithological association.

Ulf Ahlquist lives by the Fröjel coast and has made three of the finds, two of which on Tuesday morning.

- I go here almost every day with my dogs and binoculars to watch birds.

It is not often that dead herring guillemots come in, he says.

- What is important is to find out the extent.

Is it only on this coast with herring guillemots or will more come in?

We want to get all the reports in, says Måns Hjernqust and says that the dark figure is often large.

Bird flu in wild birds is increasing

Måns Hjernquist does not want to speculate on what may have caused the deaths, but a bird that was injured showed signs that are typical of bird flu.

Several of the findings on Gotland are now being sent to the Swedish Veterinary Institute for sampling and analysis.

SVA also reports today that they are currently seeing an increase in the number of cases of bird flu in wild birds, which is unusual for the season when the virus normally has poorer conditions to survive during the summer.

Bird colonies in several northern European countries have been affected by a large number of dead birds.

On the west coast, mainly sole have died and six of the birds sent to SVA turned out to have bird flu.
