The Ukrainian flag is flying again on Serpents' Island, a military spokeswoman announced on Monday, confirming its recapture by Ukrainian forces.
This small island in the northwest Black Sea became iconic on the first day of the Russian invasion when a member of the small Ukrainian garrison defending it ordered the Russian ship demanding its surrender to "fuck it ".
No more Russians since Thursday
“The flag of Ukraine has been installed on Serpents' Island.
The military operation is over and the territory has now returned to the jurisdiction of Ukraine,” Southern Defense Forces spokeswoman Natalia Goumenyuk told reporters.
She did not say whether Ukrainian soldiers have resettled on the island.
Last Thursday, the Russian army had indicated that it had withdrawn from this symbolic territory "as a sign of goodwill", after having "accomplished" the "objectives set".
On Friday, the Ukrainian army accused her of having launched phosphorus bombs on the island.
