The 53rd Rencontres de la photographie d'Arles takes place from July 4 to September 25, 2022. This year, 40 exhibitions are offered to the public, grouped into five major themes: "Perform", "Experiment", "Emerge", "Explore & Witness”, and “Revisit”.

Note the highlighting of talented female photographers such as Susan Meiselas, Lee Miller (1907-1977) or Léa Habourdin.

Here is a small preview in pictures.

  • Five major themes – “Perform”, “Experiment”, “Emerge”, “Explore & Witness”, and “Revisit” – punctuate the 53rd edition of the Rencontres de la photographie in Arles.

  • The exhibition

    A feminist avant-garde of the 1970s

, which brings together more than two hundred works by seventy-one women artists from the Verbund collection in Vienna, is presented for the first time in France.

From the 1970s, it shows the work of the first artists who proposed a new "image of women", denouncing sexism, social inequalities and patriarchal power structures.

  • Still on the “Performer” theme, Susan Meiselas and Marta Gentilucci offer

    Cartographies du corps

which draws a map of the skin and gestures of older women.

  • The “Experiment” category includes a total of six exhibitions.

That of the Swiss Luka Hoffmann shows us his street photography work done with a freehand view camera (without a tripod).

    A very original practice.

  • The Chants du Ciel

    exhibition

    juxtaposes historical and contemporary photographs.

She discusses the consequences of cloud computing technologies on climate change and geopolitics.

  • The “Emerger” category highlights the 10 artists selected for the Louis Roederer Discovery Prize, with the aim of exposing the emerging photography scene.

  • During the opening week, a jury awards the Louis Roederer Discovery Prize, which rewards the winner and the structure supporting the project through an acquisition of 15,000 euros.

The public awards the Public Prize through an acquisition of 5,000 euros.

  • Five other artists are also exhibited in this theme.

Chinese Wang Yimo's exhibition consists of a video, an experimental animation and light installations, with a disused power station as a backdrop.

  • Or that of Pierfrancesco Celada who paints a portrait of Hong Kong and its complex and multiple realities.

  • The “Explore & Testify” theme consists of eight exhibitions.

    In

    Images-forêts: des mondes en extension

, Léa Habourdin presents her work on wild forests via two methods: the

    anthotype

, an image created from photosensitive material of plants, and serigraphy, a direct printing technique, she made the ink from plant species.

  • The collective exhibition

    And Yet She Turns

presents photographs of life as it is in the United States of the 21st century.

  • The category "Revisit" allows in four exhibitions to rediscover the work of photographers through the archives.

Like that of the American Lee Miller (1907-1977), who was Man Ray's muse but also a professional photographer.

  • Or that of his compatriot Mitch Epstein who made eight trips to India between 1978 and 1989.

Note that 15 other exhibitions are presented as part of the “Grand Arles Express” in the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur region.
