Olenchenko supported Volodin's statement, noting that the deployment of NATO infrastructure near the borders with Russia does not meet the interests of Finland.

The state runs the risk of "proactively calling fire on itself" in the event of any armed conflicts, the stationed bases will be considered as legitimate targets, the expert added.

“The population of cities and the nearby population becomes hostage to this stupid initiative ... This idea also undermines such an economic resource as cross-border cooperation ... This will lead to a serious degradation of relations in this region,” the specialist concluded.

He also added that from a political and economic point of view, the decision of Finland and Sweden to host NATO bases on their territory is an incompetent management decision.

Earlier, Volodin said that the deployment of NATO bases would not protect either Finland or Sweden, but would jeopardize the inhabitants of cities where military infrastructure would be located.
