Termination of the services of officials in Jordan against the backdrop of the gas disaster in Aqaba
The Jordanian Prime Minister, Bishr Al-Khasawneh, announced today the termination of the services of a number of officials against the backdrop of the gas leak disaster that occurred in the port of Aqaba in the south of the country, last week.
Al-Khasawneh said, in a series of tweets on the social networking site "Twitter", that the investigation team in the Aqaba incident accomplished its mission and prepared a report that includes a set of procedures, including the termination of the services of the Director General of the Ports Management and Operation Company and a group of other officials in the company.
Al-Khasawneh added that the termination of services also affected the Director General of the Maritime Authority.
He pointed out that the government will announce the results of the full investigation into the toxic chlorine gas leak later today, stressing that it showed a great shortcoming and failure in safety procedures and dealing with hazardous materials in the port of Aqaba, which cannot be tolerated.
Al-Khasawneh said that the Aqaba incident report, in all its details, will be referred to the Public Prosecution today.
The Secretary-General of the Jordanian Judicial Council, the media spokesman for the Judicial Council, Walid Kanakriya, announced earlier today that the Public Prosecution revealed the site of the accident and appointed a technical committee with expertise and competence to assist in the investigation procedures.
He also said that the investigation includes verifying the correctness of the procedures for loading and unloading and handling containers, which were underway at the site.
It is noteworthy that the port of Aqaba witnessed last Monday (June 27, 2022) the fall and explosion of a tank containing toxic chlorine, which led to the death of 13 people and the injury of 260, including Jordanians and foreigners, according to what was announced at the time by the Governmental Crisis Center.
