The United Nations condemned the demonstrators storming the headquarters of the Libyan House of Representatives in Tobruk, demanding respect for the people's right to peaceful protest, and the European Union called on the parties to listen to the protesters' demands and hold elections.

Today, Saturday, the United Nations Special Adviser in Libya, Stephanie Williams, called for respecting the right of the people to peaceful protest, and said that riots, such as storming the headquarters of the House of Representatives, are totally unacceptable, as she put it.

She added that the protests are an explicit call for the political class to put aside their differences and hold the elections that the Libyan people want.

For his part, EU Ambassador to Libya Jose Sabadell said that the voices of Libyans, across the country, who want change through elections must be heard.

He added, in a tweet on Twitter, that the protests should be peaceful, and away from any form of violence;

At the same time, he stressed the need for self-restraint, especially in light of the fragile situation that Libya is currently witnessing.

The US ambassador to Libya said that his country is concerned about the political and economic stalemate that led to the unrest yesterday, considering that any unilateral solution will lead to violence, and that dialogue is what will chart the way for elections and political stability.

"There is no single political entity that legitimately controls all of Libya," the US ambassador added.

Libyan political analyst Hazem al-Rais said that the protests that took place yesterday, in Tripoli, Benghazi, Tobruk and other regions, could create some alternative solutions that would force the UN mission and international parties to think of alternative solutions.

On Friday evening, angry demonstrators stormed the parliament headquarters in Tobruk and set fire to part of it.

Meanwhile, the Libyan Ministry of Finance stated that the burning of the Financial Services Control Building in Sebha will negatively affect the disbursement of salaries of entities funded by the state's public treasury.

The last round of talks in Geneva between Parliament Speaker Aguila Saleh and the President of the Supreme Council of State Khaled Al-Mashri concluded on Thursday without agreement on a constitutional framework for holding the elections.
