Anti-military protests in Khartoum and its suburbs for the fourth day
Sudanese protests continue for the fourth consecutive day in the streets of Khartoum and its suburbs, as hundreds of people came out on Sunday calling for civilian rule and an end to the military coup carried out by the army chief last year.
On Thursday, the Sudanese capital witnessed the bloodiest day since the beginning of the year, with the killing of nine demonstrators demanding the return of civilians to power, more than eight months after the military coup that plunged the country into a cycle of violence and deepened the economic crisis.
The coup led by the army chief, Lieutenant-General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, on October 25, 2021, ended a fragile division of power between civilians and military personnel who were installed after the overthrow of former President Omar al-Bashir’s rule in 2019 under the pressure of a popular revolution.
Since the coup, 114 protesters have been killed, as stated in a Saturday statement by the Central Anti-Coup Sudan Doctors Committee.
The same source indicated that hundreds were also wounded by the security forces.
