He added that Vinnik had served his sentence and was to be released on June 30.

“However, despite the defense’s insistent requests for immediate release, Vinnik was not given the opportunity to leave Sante’s prison,” Belo said in a statement to TASS.

The lawyer stressed that the Greek side had sent France its consent to serve Vinnik with an American arrest warrant.

“Thus, at the moment when Alexander was supposed to be released, he was again under arrest pending extradition,” summed up Belo.

In June, the Paris Court of Appeal confirmed the sentence of Alexander Vinnik, who had previously been sentenced to five years in prison on charges of money laundering.

Alexander Vinnik was arrested in Greece in the summer of 2017 at the request of the United States.

The American authorities accused him of money laundering through a cryptocurrency exchange.

Two years later, the Russian was extradited to Paris, where in December 2020 he was found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison.

The United States and Russia also filed requests for the extradition of Vinnik.
