A gunman kills 3 officers and injures 5 in a massacre in the US state of Kentucky

Yesterday evening, the US authorities announced that three policemen were killed and five others were injured in eastern Kentucky, when a man with a rifle opened fire on police who were trying to implement an arrest warrant.

Police arrested 49-year-old Lance Storz late Thursday night, after an hours-long standoff at a home in Allen, a small town in the Appalachian Hills.

An emergency management official was also injured and a police dog was killed, the arrest statement said.

John Hunt, Floyd County Sheriff's Office, told reporters Friday afternoon that officers who responded faced "pure hell" when they arrived at the scene.

He added that Storz surrendered after negotiations involving his family, and told local media that law enforcement agents were implementing an injunction issued Thursday evening in a case of domestic violence.

Hunt said one officer, William Petrie, and Prestonsburg police captain Ralph Frassor were killed in the shooting.

In turn, the police said in a post on social media, Friday evening, that another member of Prestonsburg, Jacob Chavins, died after being taken to hospital.
