The Secretary-General of the United Nations: a "silent epidemic" kills 1.3 million and infects 50 million every year!

Today, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described road accidents as a "silent epidemic" that kills 1.3 million people and injures 50 million more around the world annually.

This came at the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly currently being held at the headquarters of the International Organization in New York under the title "Horizon 2030 for Road Safety: Securing a Decade of Action and Implementation".

"Road accidents are the silent epidemic, with 1.3 million people dying on the world's roads and more than 50 million seriously injured each year," Guterres said in his speech at the meeting's opening session.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations added: "Today, road accidents are the number one cause of death in the world among young people between the ages of 5 and 29. This is an unacceptable and completely avoidable tragedy."

“Road traffic deaths are closely related to poor and unplanned infrastructure, lax social protection and health care systems, limited road safety, and persistent inequality within and between countries,” Guterres said.
