The existing law considers the persons concerned to be sick.

We want to give everyone the dignity they deserve

”: the Minister of Justice who presented the bill with his colleague in charge of the Family defended the project which appeared in the coalition contract signed last fall.

The current forty-year-old law has already been partly overturned by the Constitutional Court.

Transgender people today have to face a long, costly and often perceived as intrusive procedure with two expert reports while these people win their case in 99% of cases.

A simplified approach

In the future, an adult applicant will simply have to declare his change of sex and, if applicable, first name to the civil status.

Minors over the age of 14 can take this step, but with the agreement of both parents.

For the youngest, only the legal guardians will be able to file a request.

The bill has been welcomed by the two trans MPs in the Bundestag as well as organizations that have long been fighting for reform.

The Christian Democrats have already expressed their reservations.
