Russia announces its withdrawal from Serpent Island in the Black Sea

Russia announced that it is in the process of withdrawing its forces from the island of Zmini (Snake Island) in the Black Sea, which it had occupied since the second day of the war in Ukraine, more than four months ago.

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said the withdrawal was a "goodwill gesture" and showed Russia was not impeding the export of grain or agricultural products from Ukraine.

He said that the Russian forces "completed the tasks assigned to them on Snake Island."

Ukrainian forces attacked the island several times with drones and warplanes.
