The mayor of Castenaso, a small Italian town near Bologna, recently banned hairdressers and barbers in his town from double-shampooing their clients.

According to

The Guardian

, this unprecedented decision in the country aims to combat the drought currently prevailing in the region and above all to avoid wasting water.

“If we multiply the amount of water used for each customer, we are talking about thousands of liters per day,” laments Carlo Gubellini.

The measure was put in place on Saturday and three days later, checks took place in the ten hairdressing salons and barbers in this town of 16,000 inhabitants.

If establishments do not comply with the rules, they face fines of up to 500 euros.

A measure in force until the end of September

The municipality of Castenaso also wanted to distribute an explanatory manual to professionals.

In it, she informs them that an open tap leaks 13 liters of water per minute and that it takes at least 20 liters to rinse a person's hair twice.

According to our colleagues, the majority of professionals in the sector welcomed this emergency measure.

Unless extended, it should last until the end of September.

This unprecedented measure comes at a time when Italy is at the heart of one of the most serious periods of drought in recent decades.

If thousands of liters of water are thus saved in Castenaso, "imagine what this means in terms of water consumption in large cities"

,

warned the mayor, who calls on his Italian counterparts to take similar decisions.

In Milan, for example, public fountains have already been closed.
