The department condemned the decision of the SAR and called it an unfriendly act against Ukraine, an encroachment on its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as a gross violation of the UN Charter.

“Ukraine, in response to this unfriendly act, announces the severance of diplomatic relations with Syria without severing consular relations,” the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a Facebook statement*.

Earlier, the SANA agency, citing the Syrian Foreign Ministry, reported that the Syrian Foreign Ministry announced the decision of Damascus to recognize the independence of the Lugansk and Donetsk People's Republics.

LPR Ambassador to Russia Rodion Miroshnik said that Syria's recognition of the independence and sovereignty of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics has not yet been formalized on paper.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky threatened Syria with a break in relations after Damascus' decision to recognize the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics.
