Europe 1 Studio SEASON 2021 - 202207:00 a.m., June 29, 2022

Listen to the story dedicated to the Lumière family, true pioneers of photography and cinema from the second half of the 19th century.

If the best known names today are those of Louis and Auguste, the Lumière brothers, creators of film photography, the history of this invention begins with the patriarch Antoine Lumière.

This first established himself as a sign painter, then following an unexpected encounter, he found himself seized with a passion for photography... In this first part of the episode, Clémentine Portier-Kaltenbach makes the story of Antoine Lumière's rise as a professional photographer.

In this new episode of the "At the heart of history" podcast, Clémentine Portier-Kaltenbach tells the story of the Lumière family, French industrialists whose inventions have greatly contributed to the progress of photography.

In 1878, the portraits made by the father of the family Antoine Lumière were first noticed during the Universal Exhibition in Paris.

A success that gave him the means to devote himself to his greatest project: placing photography at the heart of the daily life of the men and women of his time.

To make his art accessible to all, he is working in his Lyon workshop on a new chemical process: gelatin-silver bromide emulsion.

A magic formula?
